AKSHAYA TRITIYA

Akshaya Tritiya is a very popular festival that is celebrated in parts of India every year. It falls on the third Tithi (lunar day) of the Bright Half (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Vaishakha.

This day is considered a lucky day because both the Sun and the Moon are at their brightest on this day.  In Hindi, the word Akshaya (अक्षय) means imperishable or never diminishing in the sense of prosperity, hope, joy, success, while Tritiya means third. It is believed that any investment, venture on this day will bring wealth and prosperity to us.

In 2026, Akshaya Tritiya Falls on Sunday, 19th April.

Significance of Akshaya Tritiya

 

  • Akshaya Tritiya is believed in Hinduism to be the birthday of Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu.
  • Lord Ganesha and Ved Vyasa started writing the epic Mahabharata on this day.
  • On this day, Goddess Annapurna was born.
  • It is on this day that Kubera worshipped Goddess Lakshmi and thus was assigned the job of being the treasurer of Gods.
  • In Jainism, this day is celebrated to commemorate Lord Adinatha, their first God.
  • In Puri, the annual construction of chariots for Rath Yatra has started.

On this day, gold is bought as a symbol of eternal wealth and prosperity. Akshaya Tritiya pooja is done to invite prosperity.
